Denouncing Entire Cities

So I'm reading through Matthew and come to the part in chapter 11 where Jesus begins to denounce the cities because of their lack of repentence. So Jesus blows through this list of cities that he says will decend to Hades and it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgement than for them. YIKES!!
But what I find interesting is the following verses, "I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father this way was well-pleasing in Your sight."
These are some pretty harsh words, don't ya think? What do you do with this passage, does this passage show election or what? What do you think?

That is a tough passage. It makes me think of what Jesus said to Nichodemus about how a person must be reborn. So in essence all believers are spiritual infants. Then there are the "wise" who refuse to believe because they "know" too much. The truth in the scriptures does not match their worldly knowledge. For example, dead is dead -- no one comes back to life. Therefore Jesus was a good teacher but he is dead. Now I am just rambling. I struggle to understand election/predestination especially when I read 2 Peter 3:9 "...He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

I've heard it said that many people miss heaven by about 12-18inches (dist. form their head to their heart) Not sure I follow some of what you were saying about Jesus being dead and him being a good teacher. I believe that he was WAY more than just a "good teacher" and about him being dead, yes in the regards that he is not physically here on earth, but he's far from being dead! And I believe in 2Peter 3:9 with God not WANTING any to perish, But the beauty is that we have free will, I think that was the only way it would have worked without having us all be robots/puppets w/ our puppet master. What's so amazing about all of this, is that we don't deserve any of it...I guess that's why its grace.

Because you get it that Jesus is alive, you are not one of those who believes that science explains away a need for God and that Jesus could not possibly be alive. You were open to the gospel and believed. That makes you born again and therefore and infant rather than one so "wise" by the world's standards that you miss the truth when it is right in front of you. Well that is the best I can explain my thoughts about this verse and they could be way off the mark. Thank God for grace.
